Menopause is a time in a woman’s life when her ovaries stop producing eggs and her body goes through some changes. Some women experience hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and vaginal dryness. As we age, our bodies produce less of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which can lead to cellular degeneration and an increased risk of diseases such as osteoporosis. Other risk factors associated with menopause that women should be aware of include cardiovascular disease due to oxidation damage caused by free radicals; and cognitive decline due to cellular degeneration that affects the brain’s ability to think and remember clearly. Fortunately, many of these risks can be reduced through lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, taking supplements to replace hormones lost during menopause, reducing stress levels, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption.
