Nutrigold Webinar:
Mislabelling of Food Products, Supplements and the Nutrigold Approach
Introduction
General introduction to Nutrigold and aim of talk.
1. The Truth Behind Food Labelling (this would link into Plaskett’s ‘Surviving the British Diet’):
The current law on food labelling (1) and manipulation of labelling by food manufacturers to promote their products (2) using a couple of examples such as:
- Rebranding foods to make them appear healthier e.g. high fructose corn syrup to corn syrup due to health problems linked with fructose (3). Aspartame artificial sweetener to ‘aminosweet’ (4; could be expanded to discuss health problems with artificial sweeteners)
- Trans fats in food production (linking with problems of trans fats on health such as impairing insulin function, ref 5,6) – not regulated by FSA, only voluntary reduction undertaken by Food Industry and food manufacturers do not have to declare trans fats levels on packaging (7).
- Real definition of promotional language on food packaging such as ‘light’ and ‘lite’, ‘natural’, ‘pure’ and ‘fresh’ etc
- What’s in a food product name? e.g. Juice drinks: high added sugar and not the same as fruit juice – marketed mainly for children.
- Low fat foods that are high in refined carbohydrates = problem for obesity, NIDDM, cancer
This section could also include discussion of current FSA dietary guidelines and how these guidelines are outdated as current epidemiological and nutrition studies clearly demonstrate the link between refined carbs, obesity and related diseases (8).
2. What’s in a Supplement?
- Discussion of National food survey data (9) to highlight problem with current UK dietary intake of nutrients well below accepted naturopathic levels using examples such as omega 3, Vit D and the associated health problems.
- Brief outline of RDA/RNI/EAR/USL
- Bioavailability and efficacy problems with cheap supplements: inferior grade ingredients (e.g. poor quality lecithin compared to Superlec, fish oils compared to Marine Fish Oils), fillers and binders. This information would highlight the need for high quality premium supplements = Nutrigold products
This section could also include discussion of current European supplement labelling proposals using information from Alliance for Natural Health information (10).
3. The Nutrigold Approach (based around Citrizorb, Krill and other Nutrigold research and literature)
- Inorganic and organic minerals
- Different metallic ligands
- Information on Nutrigold supplement bioavailability and efficacy using examples such as Citrizorb and Krill Oil products
- Safe and cost effective supplements perfect for nutritional therapist to include in practice.
This section could be tailored to promote a particular range such as the Citrizorb range or a particular product such as Aloe Vera or Krill oil.
Conclusion
